The Graphic Designer (Designer & Creative Services) is responsible for the creative conception, artistic direction, execution and production of all digital assets and print materials used to communicate Artscape’s brand and key messages, as well as those of its portfolio of community cultural facilities.  The Graphic Designer (Designer & Creative Services) serves as the project lead and a key resource on design initiatives for all lines of business to move projects from conception to completion within appropriate brand guidelines, timelines and budgets. This role is part of a centralized marketing and communications team providing a shared service for staff at Artscape Head Office and all of its cultural community hubs


Creative Development & Production:

  • Leverages strong design skills and knowledge to conceptualize, create and deliver a variety of high impact, on brand visual marketing and corporate communications materials in digital and print format including, but not limited to: collateral, websites, advertisements, video assets and presentation decks, as requested by Director, Marketing & Communications, senior leadership and other teams
  • Coordinates all aspects of creative design and layout, production, printing, packaging and delivery of print and/or digital projects for all Artscape initiatives and events, and works closely with Artscape hubs on design projects, providing design and production support and visual brand oversight
  • Creates all Artscape branded internal and external facing digital and print document designs and templates (i.e. social graphic IDs, manuals, forms, graphics, presentation decks)
  • In coordination with Artscape Performance and Event Venues and Programs (Artscape’s social enterprise), designs branded materials for Artscape’s venues to ensure successful marketing and visibility
  • Develops design concepts for web, print and video projects, creating mockups, storyboards and print or web-ready layouts and appropriate files for print and/or online usage
  • Develops branded website design templates, page layouts, graphics and infographics for Artscape website and digital properties
  • Using video footage from Artscape events and activities, applies strong video editing skills to develop high impact video clips to help promote Artscape on web and other digital channels
  • Creates and maintains visual brand standards manuals and ensures accuracy and brand consistency of the Artscape visual identity across all design materials and digital platforms
  • Logistical liaison between internal and external clients for creative design needs, i.e. wayfinding signage development, fabrication and installation
  • Tracks requirements and complies with best practice in the design of digital and print communications to support Artscape to achieve the AODA standards in the delivery of communications and information
  • Evaluates and refines existing marketing and communication materials, as needed
  • Using current best practices, sources appropriate imagery for all creative projects (annual reports, brochures, websites, social channels, newsletters, etc.) and handles permission and licensing requests
  • Develops photography briefs for external photographers and provides back-up photography for events, as required

Project Management:

  • Supports all design projects for Artscape hubs, providing brand oversight and design of materials including: collateral, signage, branded communications materials, website, etc.
  • Builds and maintains good relationships with internal and external stakeholders and third party vendors on all projects, and works closely and well with all teams to bring projects to successful completion
  • Establishes workflow for full lifecycle of design each project, including creative briefs to gather information and clarify needs, and communicates clearly with key stakeholders regarding project status and timelines, from project conception through to completion on time and on budget
  • Provides expertise on creative production processes and procures, reviews and presents vendor quotes
  • Coordinates all production, including resources, timelines and assets, as well as ordering, processing and tracking in line with Artscape procurement and expense policies
  • Ensures visual brand standards are consistently followed and maintained by monitoring and clearly communicating with external stakeholders, staff and vendors regarding visual brand standards, guidelines and positioning
  • Maintains the systematic organization of all digital assets through a searchable image/video library, keeping a record of all permissions and tagging, metadata, updating, sorting and filing, as required
  • Proactively seeks to develop best practices in their relevant position and application to work
  • Obtain technical advice, communicate requirements, provide quality feedback and coordinate activities to execute initiatives with a client driven approach
  • Makes recommendations and requests approval from direct manager for possible fee adjustments to negotiate rates with clients
  • Maintain exceptional rapport with external stakeholders to exchange moderately complex information
  • Manages timelines and deliverables of others, may delegate tasks as appropriate
  • Understands and links departmental/hub work to strategic direction of the organization
  • Provides input on decisions being made through independent judgement and interpretive thinking to identify the appropriate solution and take advantage




  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in graphic/web design
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Art, Graphic Design, Communication Design and/or Multimedia Design or comparable industry experience in a related field
  • High creativity with ability to develop high impact design solutions
  • Proven digital and print design skills with impeccable attention to detail and commitment to delivering exceptional, on brand communication and marketing materials and principles of organizational branding
  • Excellent project management skills and experience with sound understanding of the importance of workflow processes and creative briefs
  • Highly proficient multi-tasker with superior organizational and time management skills to thrive in a fast-paced environment and deliver initiatives on time and on budget
  • Strong listening skills and clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be adaptable to change and work well with key internal and external stakeholders, including senior management and vendors
  • Highly motivated self-starter and a strong ‘can do’ work ethic, with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing own and others’ understanding of design best practices and deliver information in an effective, clear manner
  • Demonstrated commitment to Artscape’s mission
  • Agency or studio experience as asset

Technical Skill Requirements:

  • Superior skills in Microsoft Office programs, including template creation (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Expert knowledge and skill in key design software including: Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
  • Digital design skills in social infographic creation and email (MailChimp, Eventbrite) template design
  • Advanced skills in website design and development using WordPress CMS
  • Digital video editing, social graphics (using: After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Dreamweaver (HTML, CSS) an asset
  • Solid understanding of principles of photography and videography for appropriate image taking and selection
  • Strong familiarity with file sharing/transfer solutions (Dropbox, WeTransfer) and stock image management with online image banks (Getty Images, Shutterstock, etc.)
