POSITION:

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Stakeholder Relations, the Black Health Lead is responsible for advancing Alliance’s Black Health strategy. The priorities of this role is to support the work and priorities of the Alliance’s Black Health Committee, including but not limited to the advancement of a provincial Black Health Strategy, the governance and use of race-based data, and the development of training on anti-Black racism for healthcare providers.

The position requires a strong understanding of barriers faced by racialized people in Ontario to accessing healthcare, and more specifically, the understanding of the impact of Anti-Black racism on the health and wellbeing of the Black communities and the ongoing work of Ontario community-governed primary health care organizations towards a Black Health Strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports the work of the Black Health Committee towards improving the health and wellbeing of Black communities in Ontario through the identification of the impact of Anti-Black racism and developing strategies, actions and policy statements to address the barriers to accessing culturally safe and appropriate healthcare.  This includes but is not limited to:

– Advancing the Black Health Committee work plan.
– Working with the Alliance Communications & Stakeholder Relations Team to advance Black Health advocacy.
– Acting as the conduit between the Black Health Committee and the Alliance.
– Meets regularly with Alliance’s Director, Communications & Stakeholder Relations to discuss strategic activities and provide updates.
– Contributing to policy and government relation decisions related to Black Health.
– Oversees the Black Health Strategy.

  • Leads activities to support the work of the Black Health Committee. This includes implementing special projects as required; preparing meeting materials, agendas and minutes; providing subject matter expertise for information and decision support; and taking leadership to manage and follow-up on activities as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and supports a number of networks, committees and work groups of Executive Leaders of Member Centres.
  • Works with Alliance’s Director, Communications and Stakeholder Relations to identify advocacy priorities to be included in Alliance’s yearly strategic plans.
  • Supports the execution of communication and stakeholder relations strategies, help build relationships between the Alliance and other community organizations and support identification of opportunities for collaboration.
  • Informs, mobilizes and activates Alliance’s membership to take part in advocacy initiatives.
  • Represents the Alliance at national, provincial, local meetings, conferences, provincial government committees and public policy tables.
  • Regularly contributes to communications with Alliance members.
  • Contributes to the planning and delivery of Alliance’s annual conference, providing support in programming content for both plenaries and workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS

Mandatory Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in political science, public administration or communications preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working in community, government and/or political relations, and strategic communications.
  • Knowledge of public policy development and legislative process in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the health care and community social service sector in Ontario.
  • Demonstrated professional and lived experience related to advancing health and wellbeing for racialized people in Ontario, with an emphasis on black-identified people of colour.
  • Experience working within and understanding the dynamics of Black communities; and the unique challenges impacting health outcomes.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with different stakeholder groups including existing and potential members, representatives from government agencies, other organizations and the general public.
  • Competency in researching, analyzing, managing and synthesize large amounts of information in order to make recommendations for evidence-based decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop briefing notes, presentations and reports.
  • General understanding of community-governed Primary Health Care and its role in Ontario’s Health Care system.
  • Ability to function and respond effectively within a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-directed with initiative, with ability to work with limited supervision while contributing to a team environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to conduct work in keeping with the Alliance’s commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Competency framework.
  • Committed to and supportive of the mission of the Alliance.
  • Bilingualism in English and French an asset.
  • Experience working in a non-profit, provincial association is an asset.

Compensation

ANNUAL SALARY:  $31,235 (pro-rated from 1 FTE salary of $62,469) COMPENSATION:  The Alliance offers competitive salaries and an excellent benefits package, including pension with HOOPP. Salary is commensurate on qualifications, experience and is set within the Alliance’s established salary grid and policy guidelines.
